Podcast #89: You Got Injured. Now What?
Ya know, I'm kind of shocked that I've never done a podcast on being injured before...
But **knock on wood** I can honestly say that in my 15 years as a vegan bodybuilder, I haven't incurred too many serious injuries.
I like to credit this to a few things:
1) I am a stickler when it comes to proper form. I am a vegan personal trainer after all!
2) I consume a ton of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich foods on the daily thanks to my healthy, plant-based diet. And studies do show that a vegan diet IS optimal for better athletic performance and quicker recovery time.
And 3) I have never let any kind of injury prevent me from working out completely. Whenever I've broken a bone or pulled a muscle, I've really tried to embrace the opportunity to LEARN all that I can about it: the why, what, where, when and how behind this "chink in my armour. "
And rather than focus on everything I can't do, I really do try to shift my focus to what I can still train. And I definitely don't let an injury put a stop to my consistent routines and good habits.
"When you lose hope, you lose everything."
This podcast is really more about the best possible mindset that should come with being injured (rather than sharing a bunch of physical measures you can take to treat or heal an injury.)
We talk about the importance of being a researcher of yourself and how injuries can be a great teacher for us. And we discuss why complete rest is NOT the surefire way to heal an injury.
Here's hoping my current elbow / forearm injury continues to heal so this episode holds true for many years to come. ;)
